ICAM-China Summer School, 2014

New Developments in Condensed Matter Physics Weihai, Shandong Province, China

July 19 - August 06, 2014

General Information

The ICAM-China and the Collaborative Innovation Center of Quantum Matter will organize an international summer school this year from Jul. 19- Aug. 06. The summer school will be focused on the “The New Developments in Condensed Matter Physics”, which includes new phenomena and predicted effects observed in the observation of quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), discovery of iron-based superconductors, progressing in interface superconductivity, valleytronics, spin superconductor, spin superfluidity and so on. The summer school will be held in Weihai, Shandong Province, a city located on the beautiful sea shore of East Chinese Sea. The students’ body will include a balanced mix of international students.

Funding

This Summer school is co-funded and hosted by ICAM-China and the Collaborative Innovation Center of Quantum Matter.

School Overview

The exploration of novel quantum behaviors of materials plays a significant role in today’s forefront of condensed matter physics (CMP). Progress in this front helps not only understanding the basic principles of physics, but also advancing the technological reserve. In recent decade, clusters of new phenomena and predicted effects are observedincluding the observation of quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), discovery of iron-based superconductors, progressing in interface superconductivity, valleytronics, spin superconductor, spin superfluidityetc. For example, iron-based superconductor is a new family of high temperature superconductors behind cuprates. The highest Tc in this family is about 55K reported in June 2008. Meanwhile, the TC in interface superconductivity system, angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) further revealed one unit cell FeSe film a nearly isotropic superconducting gap of ~ 15 meV, which closes at a temperature of 65 ± 5 K, suggesting a new record in TC for iron-based superconductors.

Another development is observation of QAHE, the quantized version of the anomalous Hall effect has been predicted to occur in magnetic topological insulators, but it realized in experiment till last year (2013) in thin films of chromium-doped (Bi,Sb)2Te3, a magnetic topological insulator.

Additionally, symmetry and topology are but two examples of recent focus in the research of quantum matters. Graphene, which is honeycomb lattice with six-fold rotational symmetry, leads to the remarkable Dirac Fermion in condensed matter and abundant associated novel quantum phenomena. If the centrosymmetry of a honeycomb lattice is broken, chiral Fermionic excitations could be produced. MoS2, as the material broken centrosymmetry of a honeycomb lattice, provides an important bridge for the theoretical proposal of valleytronics.

Spin superconductor is a novel type of macroscopic quantum state, which is the analogue of conventional charge superconductor including two basic properties, zero spin resistance (spin current can flow without dissipation, but no electric current can flow in a spin superconductor) and the electric Meissner effect (spin superconductors can screen the variation of electric fields).

Superfluidity is a general quantum phenomenon occurring in Bose systems. Recently, based on the computation of the Bogoliubov excitations of a spin-orbit coupled Bose-Einstein condensate, a new type of Bose gas system thatpossesses spin-orbit coupling (albiet artificial) is realized.

Although all these new developments are based on physical concept familiar to scientists doing cutting-edge research, they are still too new to be included in the standard textbooks for graduate students. The main purpose of this summer school is to fill up the gap between the graduate courses taken in the school and the cutting edge researches in modern condensed matter physics. The summer school will be specially designed for senior undergraduate and the first or second year graduate students, who are about to begin or just start their Ph.D studies in condensed matter physics. We are going to include the following contents in this summer school,

i)                 Topological insulator and Quantum anomalous Hall effect (QAHE), which including the introduction of the topological orders and the topological classifications of the states in condensed matter, QAHE in theory and realization in experiments;

ii)               Iron-based superconductors, which will introduce the structure and classification of iron-based superconductors and discuss the urgent problems in it;

iii)             Low-dimensional superconductors, including the introduction of interface superconductivity, low-dimensional conventional superconductors/high temperature superconductors;

iv)              Two-dimensional materials, including physical properties of graphene, MoS2, etc. and introduction of valleytronics;

v)               Spin superconductor and spin superfluidity, which will introduce AC spin-current Josephson effect, ultracold atomic gases, Bose-Einstein condensate, spin current, etc.
