Academic Experience and Education

Enge Wang graduated in theoretical physics from Liaoning University (1982) and obtained his PhD in condensed matter physics from Peking University (1990). He did his research in Princeton through an exchange program and worked at Institut d’Electronique, de Microelectronique et de Nanotechnologie (France) and University of Houston as a post-doctoral fellow and a research scientist. He started his academic career in 1995 as a professor at Institute of Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS). He was the Director of the Institute of Physics (CAS) (1999-2007), the Founding Director of International Center for Quantum Structures (2000－2001), the Co-Director of Beijing National Laboratory for Condensed Matter Physics (2004-2009), the Executive President of CAS Graduate University (2008-2009), the Deputy General Secretary of CAS (2008-2009), the Dean of School of Physics, the Dean of Graduate School, the Provost and Executive Vice President (2009-2012), the President (2013-2015) of Peking University, and the Deputy President of Chinese Academy of Sciences (2015-2017). Since 2018, he is the University Chair Professor of Physics of Peking University, the Chairman of Advisor Board of Institute of Physics (CAS), the Chairman of Advisory Committee of National Scientific Center at Beijing, the Chairman of Board of Directors of Songshan Lake Materials Lab at Guangdong, the Honorary Director of the Kavli Institute of Theoretical Sciences at University of CAS, the Honorary President of Dongguang Academy of Advanced Ceramics and Composite Materials. He is also the Vice President of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics (IUPAP, 2018-2020), the International Councilor of American Physical Society (APS, 2019-2021), the Chairman of Global Cooperation Alliance of Science Centers (GCASC, 2019-), and the Vice President of the Chinese Physical Society (CPS, 2012-2015).

Enge Wang was also a JSPS professor of Tohoku University (Japan, 2001-2002), an AvH Scholar of Fritz-Haber Institute der MPG (Germany, 2005-2009), a GCEP Professor of Department of Applied Physics, Stanford University (2008-2009), a KITP visiting Professor, University of California at Santa Barbara (2009), and visiting professor of Department of Applied Physics, Stanford University (2019). He is a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS, 2007) and the Academy of Sciences for the Developing World (TWAS, 2008), a Senior Fellow of Hong Kong Institute for Advanced Study (2019), a Fellow of the American Physical Society (APS, 2006), and a Fellow (FinstP) of the Institute of Physics (UK, 2003).

Research Interests

Enge Wang’s research background is in surface physics; the approach is a combination of atomistic simulation of nonequilibrium growth and chemical vapor deposition of light-element nanomaterials. This study primarily involves formation and decay mechanisms of surface-based novel structures. In the past 20 years, he focuses on the full quantum effect on anomalous behaviors of water under confinement.  In the above areas, he is the author of over 360 papers in peer-reviewed journals (50 in Science, Natures, and PRL) and 2 books, coeditor of 1 MRS proceeding, and coinventor on 20 patents. He delivered over 100 plenary/keynote/invited talks including APS, ACS, MRS, IUMRS and ψ_K, and gave over 100 seminars/colloquiums worldwide, including Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, Columbia, Oxford, Cambridge, Tokyo, Kyoto, Peking and Tsinghua University. He is an ISI highly cited researcher in physics with over 20000 citations (with H-index of 66 including 38 of his papers cited over a hundred times each and 2 of his papers cited over a thousand times each).

Awards and Honors 　

Enge Wang was named a number of international and national academic awards, for example, the Advanced Materials Laureate (Sweden, 2018), the Tan Kah Kee Science Award in Mathematics and Physics (2014), the Asian Consortium on Computational Materials Science (ACCMS) Award (Singapore, 2011), the 2nd Place of the National Science and Technology Award (2004 and 2011), the first Ten Outstanding Scientist Award in China (2010), the HLHL Science and Technology Award (2010), the GCEP Scholar (Stanford, 2009), the Distinguished Chinese Visiting Scholar (Hong Kong PolyU, 2008),  the Distinguished Lecturer (Australian Research Council Nanotechnology Network, 2007), the TWAS Award in Physics (2005), the Humboldt Research Award (2005), Zhou Pei-Yuan Physics Award (Chinese Physics Society, 2005), the Outstanding Science and Technology Achievement Prize (CAS, 2005), the IBM Faculty Award (2003), the Achievement in Asia Award (AAA) of the Overseas Chinese Physics Association (2003), the 1st Place of the Science and Technology Award of Beijing (2003 and 2008), Youth Scientist Award (CAS, 1997), Distinguished Young Research Award (Hong Kong Qiu Shi Science Foundation, 1996), Outstanding Young Research Foundation (NSFC, 1995) and 100 Talent Programme Scientist (CAS, 1994) etc.

Professional Activities

Enge Wang’s service to the physics community in many committees, for examples of the Vice President (2017-2020) of the International Union of Pure and Applied Physics  (IUPAP), the International Councilor of American Physical Society (APS, 2019-2021), the Chairman of Global Cooperation Alliance of Science Centers (GCASC, 2019-), the board member of MRS Pacific Rim Committee, and the Vice President of the Chinese Physical Society (CPS, 2012-2015). He is an honorary professor of Department of Physics, the University of Hong Kong, and a member of the International Advisory Board, the PIRE-ECCI of University of California Santa Barbara, the Graduate School for Integrative Sciences and Engineering of National University of Singapore, the Materials Simulation Laboratory of University College London (UK), the Center for Advanced Interdisciplinary Research in Materials of University of Chile (Chile), the National Institute for Materials Science (Japan), the President’s International Advisory Council, King Abdullah University for Science and Technology (Saudi Arabia), and the Graduate School and Research Center, Monash University (Australia). Meanwhile he has chaired or acted as an organizer for tens of conferences, including APS, MRS and IUMRS etc.

Editorial Boards 　

Enge Wang is an editor, executive editor or an editorial board member for more than ten international journals, such as AIP Advances, Science Bulletin, J. of Phys.: Conden. Matter, Solid State Communication, IEEE Transactions on Nanotechnology, Journal of Computational and Theoretical Nanoscience, the Open Condensed Matter Physics Journal, Science and Technology of Advanced Materials, International Journal of Modern Physics B, Modern Physics Letters B, Frontiers of Physics in China, etc.

Current or Past Supervisor

Enge Wang completed supervision of 45 doctoral theses, including two dual degrees in University of Sciences and Technologies of Lille (France) and one in Chalmers University of Technology (Sweden), 7 M.S. theses, and 11 post-doctoral fellows. About half of them joined the faculty of major universities/institutes in China, Japan, North America, and Europe. Present group:  6 post-doctoral fellows plus 6 graduate students.

Among his students, Dr. Wenguang Zhu got 2004 MRS Graduate Student Silver Awards, Dr. Shenyuan Yang got 2008 MRS Graduate Student Silver Awards, Dr. Guangyu Zhang got the “100 Excellent PhD theses in China” (2006), Dr. Guangyu Zhang (2003) and Dr. Jianjun Yang (2004) got the President Awards of Chinese Academy of Sciences for excellent research. Dr. Kaihui Liu got the Best Presentation Award, ICYS-ICMR Summer School on Nanomaterials, Tsukuba, Japan(2007) and Dr. Wangyang Fu got the Best Speaker Award, the 14th Vietnam School of Physics, Quy Nhon, Vietnam(2008). Mr. Lei Liu got the Best Poster Award, the 4th International Conference on New Diamond and Nano Carbons (NDNC 2010), Dr Wenguang Zhu (2011), Drs Dingyong Zhong and Chunyi Zhi (2012), Dr Kaihui Liu (2014), Drs Peng Gao and Ding Pan (2015),  Drs. Jie Ma, Lei Liu, and Zhiwen Shi (2016), Drs. Wangyang Fu and Donghui Guo (2017),  got the Young Talent Scholar (China).
